Mary ThomsitAt school I loved art and maths, and was encouraged to enter the profession of architecture. During university I completed two degrees, and then worked as an architect for the next 25 years. However, I always yearned to return to art, so when offered redundancy I leapt at the opportunity. I acquired City and Guilds' certificates in marbling, graining and gilding. Having completed the decorative courses, I went on and did the Foundation Year in Art, majoring in portraiture, and received a distinction. After the courses I started working independently, drawn to Trompe L'Oeil as I enjoy manipulating perspective and deceiving the viewer with a 3-D image. I think this ability comes from years in architecture where a precise technique was required. ![]() |
